Contrary to popular belief, Jesus was not crucified on “Good Friday”. The Bible clearly states that Jesus was in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights. He must have died on Wednesday to be in the grave for the 3 full days and nights, to be raised from the dead before the dawning of Easter Sunday. The sign that the Pharisees sought was proshesied in Matthew 12:39-40. Jesus would be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights, just as Jonas was in the whale’s belly for three days and three nights.

In Matthew 12:38, the Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign to prove that he is the Son of God. He refused. But Elder David Pyles shows us that Jesus is exactly what a reasonable thinking person would expect of God manifested in the flesh. In this, Jesus is indeed His own sign.

Elder Sonny Pyles brings us a sermon from John 17:10, where Jesus says, “And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.” Legally, there are many ways one may possess something and make it “mine.” This list from a law book corresponds nicely to the ways the Bible describes that Jesus has claimed us as His own:

1. By purchase
2. By creating
3. By inheritance
4. By marriage
5. By birth
6. By adoption
7. By finding

Elder David Pyles teaches us that “the law is not made for a righteous man”, quoting from 1 Timothy 1:9. Laws are given, because they are already being broken. The lesson is that following the golden rule will cause a man to far exceed the need of the law.

Elder Gus Harter begins a study of the week leading up to the crucifixion of Christ with the gospel account of his last visit to Bethany in John 12. Our church was named after this place near Jerusalem that often welcomed our Lord, a place where He had friends and loved to visit. Here was Lazarus, raised from the dead, a continual living testimony of the power and divinity of Christ; here was Martha, hardworking and dedicated to the service of Jesus and His followers. And here was Mary, at the feet of Jesus as always.

Of the followers of Christ, only Mary showed by her actions that night that she believed what Jesus said, that He must soon die. With spices and precious oil she anointed His body for that brief appointment with the grave. The odor of the ointment filled the room, a sweet odor memorializing her service. Christ said it would always testify of Mary’s faith, throughout the ages until He returns triumphant. May we, like Mary, be found serving the Lord so that the sweet odor of service to Him fills our lives.

Elder Gus Harter reads from Psalm 90, penned by Moses, to begin an examination of how precious time is and how a wise man responds to the realization. Moses teaches us to number our days, because time is short. Ecclesiastes 3 teaches us that every purpose under heaven has a proper time, or season. Psalm 31 tells us that our times our in God’s hands, and Ephesians 5 reminds us to redeem the time in the way we live.

Each Sunday evening starting March 6, Bethany Church is excited to host a series on biblical parenting. Our pastor, Elder Gus Harter, will present the lessons. Elder Harter has been married for 53 years and is the father of 19 children. We warmly invite our friends in the community to join us Sunday nights, and stay for pizza and fellowship afterward.

Each family in attendance will receive a copy of the book Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp.
