Preaching from Philippians 3, Gus Harter emphasizes the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Paul pointed out his own distinguished lineage, his devotion to religious activities, and his good reputation among the religious leaders of the day. None of these, said Paul, were of any value compared with knowing Christ. If we desire that personal knowledge of Jesus, scriptures identify four practices that help disciples of Christ draw closer to Him.
- Simplicity: Over-busy lives and hectic schedules crowd out time with God. Evaluate priorities and clear the calendar of activities that add chaos without bringing true value.
- Silence: Noise and other distractions steal focus and drown out the quiet, inner voice. It is important to schedule a meeting time with God that can be kept without interruption.
- Solitude: At regular intervals, set aside a time to retreat far from the patterns of life and demands of others for self-examination and reflection. God can use these times to reveal areas where growth or repentance is needed.
- Surrender: When God does reveal to us a need of Him, a weakness, a sinful habit–will we submit to His authority over our lives? We are prone to rebellion, but it is repentance that removes the barriers to intimacy with our Lord.
