Turning to Isaiah 6, Gus Harter examines the encounter of the prophet Isaiah with the thrice-holy God of Israel. When confronted with God’s holiness, Isaiah recognizes his own sin and imperfection. In that realization is fear and awe, mirroring that of every child of God who gets a glimpse of God’s holiness and comprehends the gulf that exists between God and man. The turning point of the encounter is the purging of Isaiah’s sin with a burning coal from the altar of God. In Christ, each of God’s children has likewise been made clean enough to stand before God unashamed. After being purified by fire, Isaiah is both motivated and acceptable to serve as a messenger of God’s glory and power. May we also have a vision of God’s holiness and our need of cleansing. When we can see God as holy, holy, holy, then life in His service will never seem dull and boring.
