Do you have a quarrel with God? Do the circumstances of your life bewilder you? Do they seem unfair? Some of God’s children express their doubts and fears openly, others perhaps push these troubling thoughts away in shame. But does God not know the truth of the matter? He knows the hearts of all His children, more intimately than we know ourselves. God is not troubled or threatened by our doubts and frustrations. Rather, he uses them ultimately to bring us closer to Him. Elder Harter examines the lives of several notable men of God in scripture who did not hesitate to complain to God, and even to oppose Him.
Jacob fought with God, and God touched Jacob so that he walked with a limp ever after. In that mark of affliction Jacob obtained a witness of his brokenness before God, and afterward was known as Israel–prince with God. Job ventured to argue his case before God, but God’s answer confounded Job and left him prostrate before majesty. Habakkuk protested the Babylonian occupation of Israel, but God gave him a glimpse of true holiness and Habakkuk wept for the sin of his people. Saul fought Christ’s church, but God brought him up short on the road to Damascus.
God is bigger than our doubts, larger than our issues, and He will prevail when we fight Him. The sooner we bring our complaints openly to God, the sooner we can find peace with Him.
