Harter: Ruth, Part 3 – Waiting

by Administrator on April 18, 2010

In the third chapter of the book of Ruth, Naomi regains hope for the future as she recognizes the signs of the affection Boaz has for Ruth. She instructs Ruth in the proper way to appeal to Boaz for the right of redemption through marriage. God’s law provided for the preservation both of the promised land and of the families that were to possess it. Should a man marry a wife but die without children, his brother or other close relative was to marry his widow. The children they bore would bear the name of the deceased husband, preserving his inheritance.

Ruth appeals to Boaz for this privilege. Boaz immediately pledges to see Ruth redeemed, and Ruth returns home to Naomi where they wait together for Boaz to accomplish the redemption. In many ways, this story illustrates Christ’s redemption of His people, and should encourage us to wait with confidence on the Lord, who will surely see His people redeemed.

This is the third of four messages Elder Harter plans to deliver covering the book of Ruth.
