In his second message exploring the book of Ruth, Elder Gus Harter exposits the second chapter. Naomi and Ruth have returned to Israel as poor widows, depending on the charity of the Israelites. God’s law provided for the poor by requiring farmers to leave the corners of their fields unharvested, and to make only a single gathering of their crops. Both of these commands left food behind for the needy, so long as those in need were willing to do the work of gathering it.
Ruth was willing to do the work. And in providence, God guided her to the field of Boaz, a wealthy, generous, and prominent man in the community. Boaz is also a close relative of Naomi, and therefore of Ruth through her marriage to Naomi’s son. The second chapter of Ruth details the first encounter of Ruth and Boaz, the beginning of a beautiful romance and a picture of God’s grace toward His children.
This is the second of four messages Elder Harter plans to deliver covering the book of Ruth.
