Brother Tim Gerke examines Jacob’s encounter with God in Genesis 32. Jacob is alone and in distress, and wrestles with God through the night. When the night is nearly spent, God asks Jacob his name. Jacob’s name captures his defining character flaw: supplanter, schemer. After showing Jacob the limitations of his strength, his stamina, and his character, God bestows His grace on Jacob. He gives Jacob a new name, Israel: prince with God. He touches Jacob’s gait with halting: a new walk. He gives Jacob a new day redeemed from his past. So He does for all of His children who will wrestle with Him in their hour of need and cling to Him for blessing.
